There are many regimes for skin care, but they all boil down to forms of "Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise".
As with any routine, consistency is the key.
So how often should you cleanse, tone and moisturise? Twice daily is best, once in the morning and once at night. After clensing and toning, a day cream should be applied in the morning to moisturise and protect the skin during the day, and in the evening either a day or night cream depending on your preference. Night creams are more nourishing and moisturising than day creams.
To give your skin a boost, 1 to 3 times a week you can put some time aside for you, and give yourself a mini-facial by incorporating a facial scrub and a clay mask into your evening cleanse.
There are 4 skin types:
> Normal
> Oily
> Dry
> Combination
As a quick guide to find out which type of skin you have, press a tissue to your skin first thing in the morning. If there is only a trace of oil on the tissue, you are one of the lucky few people who have normal skin.
If there is a fair bit of reside on the tissue, you have oily skin, and if the tissue is dry and your face feels tight or dry then you have dry skin.
It is common for people to have normal or dry skin around their cheeks and eyes and more oily skin across the forehead and down the middle of the face including the nose and onto the chin (this area is called the T-Zone). This skin type is called (you guessed it) combination.
It is normal for your skin to change as you age. As you get older you skin will get thinner, and factors such as your lifestyle, genetics, pollution, the climate in which you live, and the care you give it, all affect its appearance and feel.
Your skin changes regularly, and a large part of having good skin is to know what your skin needs are at certain times.
To get to know your skin, pay attention its general texture and feel, the level of moisture in it, any break-outs that you are experiencing, and the environment you are in during your day. Air conditioned offices or not drinking enough water for example may dehydrate your skin. Knowing when to adjust your skin care to suit your skin may just be the difference between good skin and great skin.
Skincare for most men consists of soap - and that’s it. In fact, men have the same needs for skin care as women, but are often not inclined to use the products. This train of thought is slowly changing.
Men shave and use cologne as part of their regime. These activities alone dry out the skin. A basic start to skincare for men should be to use a cleanser in the shower. Every second or third day swap this for a facial scrub. The scrub has granules in it to give a gritty feel and a deep clean to the skin. After showering and shaving, men should moisturise before the application of aftershave or cologne.
Once you are comfortable with this you may wish to try a night cream, if your skin is getting dry, or maybe a mask which I find is especially good after a gym work-out. Don’t forget to drink fluids to replace that water lost in the gym.
After your skin has been sweating and you have showered, a mask and a deep moisturise will revitalise your skin again.
